Goal: You will write a short
description of your experiences in education.
Context
You
are about to graduate and to decide where to learn next. This is
a
good time to reflect on your personal experiences in education, to help
you find the right program for you.
Brainstorm A:
List
List places where you have learned something that was important to
you. They don't all have to be schools. People who have
helped you see things in a different way count, too.
Ex: PS 320, Ms. Robinson, Boys and Girls Club, Kings County
Hospital, BCNHS
Brainstorm B: Directed
Freewrite
Have you ever thought of these educational
experiences as having something in
common? Why do you think they were all able to make such an
impression on you? Take time to consider what conditions made you
interested in learning.
Ex: small size, interesting subjects, someone to talk to (like a
Spark counselor), hands-on learning....

The
Writing Assignment An Autobiography of Your Life in
Education*
*An autobiography is a
story someone writes about their own life.
Write a factual short story -- 5 or more paragraphs
-- describing your
educational life based on your brainstorm list and reflection.
You may present it in any way you choose. For example, you may
tell it
chronologically, starting with your childhood. Alternatively, you
may
present 2 or 3 examples of different types of learning experiences
you've had, or go into detail on one particular learning experience, etc
Add an Introduction
Write one sentence that summarizes why you chose to
write about the particular learning experience(s) in your educational
autobiography:
Now, find a place to insert that sentence into your first paragraph
(You can change the phrasing as long as you keep the meaning the
same.
If you need to, you can add a sentence or two to make the new sentence
make sense in the context of what you already wrote.)
Add a Conclusion Paragraph
Write one paragraph that summarizes what your ideal college would be
like, based on the particular learning experiences in your educational
biography.
Describe what a day in your life at college would be like if you could
find one that brings together the features you just described in the
body of your educational autobiography. Close with a sentence that
considers how a college like this could affect your overall
perspective/attitude toward life and your future,

Reflect on This
Assignment: Answer the Questions that Apply to You.
Was this interesting to think and write about? How did it affect
the way you think about your education after high school? Do you
like how your educational autobiography turned out? What
did you think about writing the main part first and adding the
introduction and conclusion at the end? How well did the
brainstorms help you generate ideas for writing the educational
autobiograpy itself?
